History

On November 28, 2003, Young Democrats across Oakland, Berkeley, and the rest of northern Alameda County came together with a vision: to build the bench and open the halls of power to the youth. Our core philosophy is this: when millions of people participate in the political process, we win.

The East Bay Young Democrats (EBYD) has helped register thousands of young people to vote. In the 2016 election, we organized phonebanks for our endorsed candidates, knocked on doors throughout Berkeley to elect now-Mayor Jesse Arreguín, Berkeley’s first Latinx mayor and one of the youngest mayors in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our members have gone on to be elected to the Oakland City Council, Berkeley City Council, Berkeley Rent Stabilization Board, Alameda County Democratic Central Committee, and as Assembly District Delegates to the California Democratic Party’s Democratic State Central Committee.

Over the years, we have hosted events featuring elected public elected officials like California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony K. Thurmond, United States Congresswoman Barbara Lee, California State Senator Nancy Skinner, California State Assemblymembers Rob Bonta and Buffy Wicks, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arreguín, and Emeryville Mayor Scott Donahue.

EBYD is the place to network and socialize with a group of young progressives bound by ideals of democracy, equality, and freedom. Many of our members, both past and present, are now serving in elected office, working on campaigns, in legislative and executive offices, or in grassroots movements.

The East Bay Young Democrats is a local chapter of the California Young Democrats, the state branch of the Young Democrats of America.
